As a native Washingtonian, nothing says spring like the beloved Cherry Blosssoms in bloom at the tidal basin. Even though cherries are not in season in our neck of the woods it is hard not to dream of cherries when meandering through the magical display of billowy blooms. It is a transitional time as we move from winter into spring and for me it can still be a tad bit nippy for a smoothie. So, with that said I have been dreaming of a smoothie that is hardy enough for a cool, rainy spring day and yet still give me the feeling that spring is in the air.
Not only is this smoothie incredibly delicious but it is super nutritious too. I have chosen to use pure raw manuka honey, made from the nectar that bees sip from flower blossoms (can’t stop thinking of cherry blossoms) honey is a universal medicine, sweetner and nutrient source. Whenever possible I recommend that you choose wild honey. Most of us don’t get enough wild food into our diets. Honey has been proven to provide relief for and cure numerous disorders such as diarrhea, ulcers, infections, IBS, gastrointestinal problems, cancer and staph infections. Cacao contains the highest concentration of antioxidants of any food in the world, provided it is raw, cooking destroys most of its’ properties. Cashews are loaded with heart healthy unsaturated fats, vitamins and essential minerals. Numerous studies show that cashews are good for stong bones and lowers your risk for weight gain. Cherries are a natural anti-inflammatory and are known as cures for arthritis and gout. Cherries are also great post-workout to relieve sore muscles. Cherries also boost your melatonin to help relax you and sleep better. Avocados are loaded with healthy fats that are good for your heart, bones and teeth. They will make your skin glow, aid in muscle repair and help build a strong immune system. Coconut adds necessary dietary fiber, is loaded with vitamins and minerals including iron and will increase your stamina throughout the day. Whip up this delicious, nutritious powerhouse in a high speed blender and enjoy this beautiful spring day!
